Thought it'd be fun to have a small little poll and opinions on the new shield icon that the perfect guards have with the introduction of the Sentinel keyword, my vote goes for yes. Honestly, I like the touch it gives, and kinda reinforces its importance in a deck.

I dig the big, bold, blocky, golden look of them. it makes you stop and look at them if you're just flipping through cards, and it also makes them instantly recognizable from any distance.

It's a designer's nightmare. Busy as all hell, offsets the balance of the composition, fucking dogshit gradient with no effort, and bad beveling. It looks like some shitty web button from the 1990s. On top of the fact that it drowns out what it's actually trying to show: the tiny similarly-hued zero.

I like the concept of them glorifying the shield itself, but I think the design they went with was rather piss-poor. I think just a simple color change to the shield, or perhaps a golden-holo outline, would've sufficed just fine. And, for example, on Wyvern Guard, Guld, the damn thing blends right in to the artwork itself.

Also, the more distinguished look may help players with poor memory to help remember that you checked a PG in your drive check. Good players will keep an eye out for a PG and remember it regardless, but this may act as a minor set of training wheels for newbies and derps.

Out of curiosity, how many of us here are professional designers?

I'm certainly not, but I find that giant gold bullion stuck to the side of the card is tacky as fuck. Adding the Sentinel keyword was good enough and zero shield already implies Perfect Guard.

"Not I," says The Pirate Guy. They did make me take an Adobe software 101 class in college, though I have no idea why, since my degree is in Audio Production. Needless to say, I fumbled my way through the fucking thing. /offtopic

Essentially everything Alice said. That, and how different it is from the shield box on the rest the cards in a deck. You have these nice, smooth black shields and you suddenly draw into piece of shit gold box.

I had no idea this was such a polarized issue. It really shouldn't be since there's a clear artistic line between the two.

I like it simply because its obvious by being tacky; its much easier to explain to beginners that the Perfect Guards in their deck are special and helps in reminding people of that fact.

I don't really like the concept of Perfect Guard as much as Alice hates Hamburger-Time.
coz it's such a staple in every deck, it limits your creativity and uniqueness of decks. Although it does make a game longer and more unpredictable.
so pretty much in every deck now, we'd have a somewhat compulsory 16x trigger and 4x PG.

Hope bushiroad don't release cards of this nature anymore....

Edit: and it's so expensive ugh.....pretty much this make limitations and gap for player with tight budget

You realise that without perfect guards, vanguards like Phantom Blaster Dragon would actually be broken? Hell, all Ride Breaks would be broken; basically any card that lets you reach obscene levels of power and/or crit would be practically unstoppable.

Perfect guards are necessary so that there is actually diversity in the offense in the game; that is, since an absolute defense exists, a wider and more powerful array of offensive cards can be designed.

Lul, without Perfect Guard, Phantom Blaster Dragon is still a -2 overall with the added bonus of possibly ruining your attack forces.

No one is denying that its a neg, but now its far more likely to hit/cost them cards; it would make it a neg worth taking.

Its just one example, Raptor Colonel , Amon/Dark Lord Abyss and Ezel (to name a few) would all be nigh unstoppable due to their ability to reach high powers on their own.

But the thing is, you described it as broken if Perfect Guards didn't exist despite the fact it still has to face its absolutely ridiculous cost, and still falling flat if that power boost failed to work due to the immediate loss of resources. It might be a bit more powerful, sure, but its skill is still far too taxing to really call it broken, even under those conditions.

Well, I haven't taken any design courses (hope to take some soon), but I can see that the idea of every artist for a perfect guard taking the icon into account is quite difficult, while the original is so simple that it rarely to never clashes with a card art. Still, I do like the idea behind it, if only that idea could have been better implemented... I guess Bushi thought the extravagant icon would make it more noticeable (it does) at the cost of many other things. Or maybe I just like tacky things :/

Year 2 student in Diploma of Games Design and Development here. I find the new icon okay but I still prefer the old generic shield icon for 0.

It takes up 4 places in your deck, dude. That's less than ANY other card game's staple slots in existence. Not only that, it's not even comparable to other game's staples since you only run those because everyone else is doing it (and you'll be taken advantage of if you don't) and you can take advantage of those who don't do it. For PGs, you'd need them regardless if someone else ran them or not. It's not even a Prisoner's Dilemma like YGO staples. They're just necessary cards for the entire game by the nature of its very design.

Hahahaha it's funny because you think the artists are paying attention to that gawdy frame shit on the side. Hint: they aren't. Look at how clashingly bad a lot of the art is with that mongoloid thing. I'm not even opposed to a unique PG design. As someone stated already, it can act as a lubricant to get newbies to accept them as special and required. It's like an official bushiroad seal of excellence on the card. Do I think that should be necessary? No. I definitely prefer the plain 0 shield. But fucksake, once you add a design there's not even a point to having shield value since it's already super spessshul snoflayke.
