Anime always have more one-dimensional characters because they have so much screen time to pad out, and they figure adding "running gags" (protip Japan, these are not running gags) will fill the time while not boring people.

In manga, every panel is precious, so they have to make character development an actual THING.

This is the Asaka I like, not that 2-bit obsessed over Ren shit.
